HOT HOT HOT!
While most people take to their boats for relief from the heat, at least one boat notified me that it was too hot for them and they would not be racing.
Most boats had people overboard prior to the start to cool off. I took advantage of the opportunity to scrub the water line of the Tri-Again before the start. After a dip in the water I felt completely revived.
I was still dripping wet as we put up the Mainsail and motored our way to the middle of the becamlmed starting line. Our star platn was again late due to light wind and beibg interrupted by Pokey who was right were I wanted to be... We were all subjected to the race committee's Repeated Sarcastic calls of "All Clear!", and "Still all clear!"
But the start was to be of little use as the wind died. Three of us went right and two went left. Conventional wisdom says in light or dead air on hot days, head toward land to get the best wind. But our sailing area typically gives advantages to those who head out closest to the Channel. Not tonight.
Windlines formed at inner Maumee Bay and worked their way around bay point, reaching Pokey and Nautilus first. They got one over on us!
All the boats reached Turtle Island at nearly the same time and it was almost like starting the race over again. The wind was now up with gusts to 12 knots and we were on a close-reach/fetch to the finish. It turned into a beautiful sail.
